Until an infringing link is posted somewhere, those files are just nondescript bits stored on a hard drive.?RapidShare?s CEO says they?ve been doing this on their own for quite some time and that the court?s decision validates their business model. That?s a good thing, but the verdict also shows that the courts are watching closely ? and that there will no doubt be repercussions should RapidShare slip up.

While this ruling should let others in the digital locker and file hosting business breathe a little more easily, it certainly doesn?t signal the end of scrutiny and litigation from rights holders. As long as file sharing sites make sure that no external sites link to content that definitely infringes ? and promptly remove such content when it?s discovered ? everything should be just fine.

It?s probably safe to assume that groups like the MPAA and RIAA would never stoop to having files anonymously planted to get a service like RapidShare in trouble. It?s not like they?ve tried that before on torrent sites or anything?

Donor row piles pressure on PM

Pressure was mounting Monday on Prime Minister David Cameron following the resignation of a Conservative treasurer who apparently offered access to the premier in return for party donations.

Peter Cruddas was secretly filmed by the Sunday Times offering reporters posing as wealthy donors private dinners with Cameron for ?250,000 ($396,000, 299,000 euros).

On film, he suggested their views would be fed into a government policy committee.

In a statement, Cruddas said his comments were merely "bluster" and insisted there was "no question" of selling access to politicians, but offered his resignation from the job he had taken only a month ago.

Cameron, the Tory leader, condemned the remarks as "completely unacceptable", telling the BBC: "This is not the way that we raise money in the Conservative party, it shouldn't have happened.

"It's quite right that Peter Cruddas has resigned. I will make sure there is a proper party inquiry to make sure this can't happen again."

But Downing Street later admitted the premier and his wife Samantha had hosted "a small number" of dinners for Tory donors, and the leader now faces a grilling from opposition MPs in Monday's parliamentary session.

Senior opposition Labour lawmaker David Miliband -- brother of Labour party leader Ed Miliband -- said the revelations would be deeply embarrassing for the prime minister.

"The idea that policy is for sale is grotesque," he said.

The Conservatives openly list the benefits of donating to the party on their website, offering wealthy backers the chance to join "The Leader's Group", which gives access to dinners and events with Cameron, for ?50,000 a year.

But Cruddas appeared to go further, discussing different sized donations and describing ?200,000 to ?250,000 a year as "premier league", granting access to Cameron and his finance minister George Osborne.

He also appeared unconcerned by the fact that the undercover reporters claimed to be representing a fund in Liechtenstein that would have been ineligible to make donations under British law, the Sunday Times said.

"I deeply regret any impression of impropriety arising from my bluster in that conversation," Cruddas said in a statement released shortly after the story broke.

"Clearly there is no question of donors being able to influence policy or gain undue access to politicians," he said.

He insisted it was "categorically not the case" that he could offer access as a result of a donation or that Cameron would consider it, and said he had had no dealings with those senior party officials who decided policy.

"But in order to make that clear beyond doubt, I have regrettably decided to resign with immediate effect," Cruddas said.

A Conservative Party spokesman said that "no donation was ever accepted or even formally considered by the Conservative party" as a result of the conversation, and insisted it always complied with the law.

"Donations to the Conservative party do not buy party or government policy. We will urgently investigate any evidence to the contrary," he added.

The issue of whether money can buy influence has long been a concern in Britain, where political parties rely on donations to fund their activities.

A major scandal erupted under former prime minister Tony Blair when his Labour party was accused of giving seats in the unelected House of Lords to wealthy backers in return for donations and secret loans.

Cameron himself warned before his Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government took office in May 2010 that lobbying was the "next big political scandal waiting to happen".

Christopher Kelly, who heads a watchdog which monitors ethics in public life, said the Cruddas row showed it was time for politicians to put aside their differences and reach agreement on reforming party funding.

"Events like (this) are inevitable as long as the main political parties are dependent for their existence on large donations from rich individuals or, in the case of the Labour party, a small number of trade unions," he said.

Danny Alexander, a senior Liberal Democrat minister, said all three main parties would be discussing reform in the coming weeks.

Classical music affects heart transplants

Classical music is good for the soul and maybe the heart too. Mice with heart transplants survived twice as long if they listened to classical music rather than pop music after their operation.

Masateru Uchiyama of Juntendo University Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, gave mice heart transplants from an unrelated donor which were therefore expected to be rejected. For a week following the operation, the mice continuously listened to Verdi's opera La Traviata, a selection of Mozart concertos, music by Enya, or a range of single monotones.

Mice exposed to opera fared best - they survived an average of 26 days, with those who listened to Mozart close behind at 20 days. Mice who listened to Enya survived for 11 days and the monotone group only seven days.

The team tested the effects of La Traviata on deaf mice too. They survived for just seven days, reinforcing the likelihood that hearing the music, rather than another factor, such as feeling vibrations from the music, accounted for the difference.

Calming effect

Blood samples from the mice revealed that the classical music appeared to slow organ rejection by calming the immune system. The mice had lower concentrations of interleukin-2 and gamma interferon ? both of which promote inflammation ? and higher levels of substances that dampen inflammation, such as interleukins 4 and 10 (Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, in press).

"We don't know the exact mechanisms but the harmony of Verdi and Mozart may be important," says Uchiyama.

The team would now like to see if the phenomenon could be used to help improve the success of transplants in people. Research in 2003 found that music therapy combined with relaxation imagery can influence pain and nausea in people following a bone marrow transplant.

John Sloboda, a professor of psychology at the University of Keele, is sceptical about the effects. "I think it dangerous to dub this an 'opera' or 'Mozart' effect on the basis of exposure to one piece from each genre," he says. "The effect might be totally specific to that piece, or even the recording, played at a specific volume, so we know nothing about what characteristics of these pieces might have caused the immunosuppressant response."

How the smell of food affects how much you eat

Bite size depends on the familiarly and texture of food. Smaller bite sizes are taken for foods which need more chewing and smaller bite sizes are often linked to a sensation of feeling fuller sooner. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Flavour, launched today, shows that strong aromas lead to smaller bite sizes and suggests that aroma may be used as a means to control portion size.

The aroma experience of food is linked to its constituents and texture, but also to bite size. Smaller bites sizes are linked towards a lower flavour release which may explain why we take smaller bites of unfamiliar or disliked foods. In order to separate the effect of aroma on bite size from other food-related sensations researchers from the Netherlands developed a system where a custard-like dessert was eaten while different scents were simultaneously presented directly to the participants nose.

The results showed that the stronger the smell the smaller the bite. Dr Rene A de Wijk, who led the study, explained, "Our human test subjects were able to control how much dessert was fed to them by pushing a button. Bite size was associated with the aroma presented for that bite and also for subsequent bites (especially for the second to last bite). Perhaps, in keeping with the idea that smaller bites are associated with lower flavour sensations from the food and that, there is an unconscious feedback loop using bite size to regulate the amount of flavour experienced."

This study suggests that manipulating the odour of food could result in a 5-10% decrease in intake per bite. Combining aroma control with portion control could fool the body into thinking it was full with a smaller amount of food and aid weight loss.

BioMed Central's open access journal Flavour, launched today is a peer-reviewed, open access, online journal that publishes interdisciplinary articles on flavour, its generation, perception, and influence on behaviour and nutrition. Flavour aims to understand the psychophysical, psychological and chemical aspects of flavour, which include not only taste and aroma, but also chemesthesis, texture, and all the senses.

Carnie Wilson Undergoes Second Lap-Band Surgery

For the second time in 12 years, Carnie Wilson has undergone gastric bypass surgery.

The singer underwent this lap-band procedure on January 18, she tells People, losing 30 pounds since that date and labeling the move as "the right decision" considering her weight loss struggle.

"I'm doing really well so far," Wilson says. "It's all about taking good care of myself."

Carnie, who experienced an unexpected career boot last year thanks to a cameo in Bridesmaids, is back together with Wilson Phillips on both a new album (it drops April 3) and a new TV Guide Network reality show (it premieres April 8 and is titled Wilson Phillips: Still Holding On).

She has two daughters and said in 2010 that shedding pregnancy pounds was a "frustrating" experience.

Big earthquake rattles Mexico, no major damage

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A major earthquake struck Mexico on Tuesday, unleashing panic as it damaged hundreds of buildings and caused homes in the capital to bounce like "trampolines".

Office workers fled into the street when the 7.4-magnitude quake shook Mexico City for more than a minute. Cell phone lines went down, buildings were evacuated, traffic snarled and the stock exchange had to suspend trading early.

At least 11 people were injured, the Interior Ministry said.

The quake hit hardest in the southwestern state of Guerrero, where around 800 houses were damaged, officials said. The state governor Angel Aguirre said he had reports of homes being knocked down, though state authorities could not confirm this.

The tremor was one of the strongest to hit the country since the devastating 8.1-magnitude earthquake of 1985, which killed thousands in Mexico City.

Mexico's interior ministry said the country would remain on high alert for the next 24 hours after 18 aftershocks to the quake were registered. Some were above magnitude 5.

Still, no deaths were reported on Tuesday and there were major disruptions to air travel or to oil installations. But it scared many residents and temporarily cut off electricity to 2.5 million users in the capital.

Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said some rails of the subway system moved as a result of the tremor while leaks at three aqueducts feeding the eastern portion of the capital would leave hundreds of thousands of homes with no water for at least a day.

Martha Suarez, an Argentine living in Mexico City's Roma neighborhood said she had never known anything like it.

"My TV set fell over, the building felt like it was on a trampoline. This one was like no other I have felt before," Suarez said, holding her little dog close.

Scores of the houses damaged were in Ometepec, a town close to the epicenter of the quake in Guerrero, the state that is home to the popular Pacific beach resort Acapulco.

In neighboring Oaxaca, 68 mud-brick houses were damaged and at least five people were injured, one of them seriously, in the area around the town of Pinotepa Nacional near the Pacific coast, local emergency services said.

Some buildings in the capital's trendy district of Condesa were cracked by the earthquake, and residents raced out of buildings with young children and dogs in their arms.

"I swear I never felt one so strong, I thought the building was going to collapse," said Sebastian Herrera, 42, a businessman from a Mexico City neighborhood hit hard in 1985.

Television images showed part of a bridge collapsed onto a vehicle on the outskirts of Mexico City. Mayor Ebrard said no one was injured and that helicopter flyovers showed there was no sign of major damage in the capital.

President Felipe Calderon also said there were no reports of serious damage, and experts said the impact did not look severe.

Eqecat, a disaster modeling company whose software is used by insurers to predict exposure to natural disasters, estimated insured losses from the quake at less than $100 million.

Fear gripped many Mexico City locals when the quake hit.

Caroline Kloesel, a German executive working in the Las Lomas neighborhood, said there was a stampede when people started fleeing the eighth floor of her building. "At some point, we got stuck and everyone started pushing. A large man had tripped (on the staircase) and fallen down. And because he was very big, they couldn't help him stand up so everyone started walking over him," she said.

Mexico City's international airport was operating normally and only a couple of flights to the United States were temporarily grounded, a spokesman said.

State oil company Pemex said all its installations on the Pacific coast were operating normally, including the country's largest 330,000-barrel-per-day capacity Salina Cruz refinery.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was magnitude 7.4 and aftershocks continued during the afternoon.

In Acapulco, schools were evacuated and some parents rushed to pick up their children, but there appeared to be no major damage to hotels or other buildings.

The White House, which has declined to confirm reports that President Barack Obama's daughter Malia was vacationing in Mexico, said the 13-year-old was safe.

The quake was felt as far away as Guatemala City.

A spokesman for Mexico City's health authorities said hospitals and clinics were operating normally although some patients were evacuated from damaged buildings.
