Boeing: more work needed before launch of stretch 787

(Reuters) - Boeing Co said on Monday it was moving ahead with plans for a stretched version of its fuel-efficient 787 Dreamliner but added that more work is needed before it obtained company approval for an official launch.

Boeing has said it has been talking with airlines and leasing companies to define specifications for the 787-10, which would be the biggest version of the plane built mostly of composite materials and a powerful rival to the Airbus A330.

"We've got a lot of support all the way through the company including our board of directors," Larry Loftis, vice president and general manager of the 787 program, said when speaking of the 787-10 during an investor call hosted by RBC Capital Markets on Monday.

"We still have some more work to do before we'd be ready to launch the program and/or be given authority to launch the program," Loftis added.

The expected longer, biggest version of the 787 would be pitched to airlines for long-haul travel.

Loftis said the backlog of 787 orders was currently split at about 60 percent for the 787-8 model, which can carry 210 to 250 passengers, and 40 percent for the 787-9, a slightly bigger version that is designed to seat up to 290. Boeing said final assembly of the 787-9 version would likely start in late spring or early summer next year, with first delivery seen in early 2014.

"Clearly our customers have told us ... that they would prefer us to focus on fuel-burn economics versus extending range" should the company launch a 787-10 version, Loftis said. He said the stretch plane, should it be rolled out, would likely enter service toward the back end of this decade.

Boeing said it was still looking to raise 787 production rates to 10 a month by the end of 2013. Pat Shanahan, Boeing senior vice president for airplane programs, said a rate of seven a month would likely be reached in mid-2013. The company in November reached a five-per-month production rate for the 787, which is built in Washington state and South Carolina.

Shares of Boeing closed up 0.7 percent at $74.27 on Monday.

US Small Business Never Recovered From the Great Recession

US small business optimism continues to improve gradually, but still remains at recessionary levels. One of the big problems for small businesses remains the uncertainty in future economic conditions. 23% of survey respondents say they have no clue what to expect from the economy going forward. That?s the highest level of uncertainty since the Jimmy Carter administration.

And as discussed earlier (see post), uncertainty can materially inhibit economic growth.

Credit conditions don?t seem to be a problem in part due to the lack of demand. With uncertainty at such high levels, the last thing a number of small businesses want to do is increase debt levels.

Weak sales are the number one single issue cited in the survey, but regulation and taxes are still a major concern for US small business ? which of course contributes to more uncertainty.

DB: -?Together, government requirements and taxes are cited by 39% of small businesses as their biggest problem among the eight remaining components.?While this is down from 42% in September, it is clearly an elevated reading that likely needs to fall substantially further for small business confidence to ultimately trend higher.

Just to put things in perspective, small businesses represent half the private GDP and half the private workforce in the US. That explains in part the anemic economic growth in the US over the last several years.

Psoriasis patients look to Hong Kong government for help - and hope

HONG KONG (Reuters) - When Gary Lai first came down with the skin disease psoriasis, he got so tired of the stigma he faced in the outside world that he would lock himself away in his apartment whenever he didn't have to be at work.

"When you have to apply ointment all over your body, it is impractical. It also has a smell and when you go to work, your colleagues will start asking questions," said Lai, who was 24 when he was diagnosed.

Now Lai, 41, and other Hong Kong residents suffering from psoriasis - a lifelong autoimmune disease that covers the skin in red, scaly plaques - have joined hands to press the government to help subsidize their high treatment costs.

Affecting up to two percent of the population in Asia, or 125 million people worldwide, this disfiguring disease can take a higher physical and mental toll on patients than cancer and heart disease, past surveys have found.

"During all that time, I experienced great stress and prejudice. In the subway, people around me will stare at me and they think I may infect them," said Lai, a data analyst. "I can tell from their eyes even if they don't say anything."

In psoriasis patients, skin cells grow too fast and rapidly pile up, forming red and inflamed scales or plaques on the skin. While cell reproduction in normal skin takes 28 days, that process in psoriasis patients takes only four days.

The exact cause of psoriasis remains unknown although experts believe it is linked to the immune system where a class of fighter cells attack the body's own healthy skin cells by mistake. They cite a combination of risk factors, including genetic predisposition and environmental factors.

Dermatologist Yeung Chi-keung said first-line treatments such as creams, exposure to ultraviolet light and oral drugs tend not to work for about 10 percent of patients, who will then require second-line drugs, which are injected.

These injectable drugs now cost an average of HK$10,000 (US$1,282) a month and getting on Hong Kong's general list will mean patients need only pay a nominal administrative fee of $10.

"In the last month, we (dermatologists in Hong Kong) proposed to the government to consider subsidizing these drugs," said Yeung, who is honorary clinical associate professor of dermatology at the University of Hong Kong's department of medicine.

A spokesman for the Hospital Authority, the body that oversees all public hospitals in Hong Kong, said it would have to make a detailed study before deciding if it will subsidize the treatment of such patients.

"The review process would take into account scientific evidence on safety, efficacy and cost-effectiveness as well as actual clinical experience in the use of drugs. Views of professionals and patient groups will also be considered," the spokesman added.

For the patients who wait and hope, the stress never goes away.

"When I go to the pool, other swimmers think it is contagious and that I will pollute the water, so they complain to the lifeguard to get rid of me," Lai said. "We hope the government will put these drugs on their general (subsidized) list."

7 Mistakes People Make When Trying to Build a Home Based ...

Building a home based business, or an online business, around your passion is tough. There are a lot of mistakes you can make. And some of those mistakes can end up costing you thousands of dollars. On top of that, some of the things can lead to hundreds of hours of frustration.

I know, because I?ve been there and done that.

I banged my head against the wall for several years. Eventually things did click, and I am now making a living doing what I love, but it wasn?t easy. That?s why I want to share some of the most common mistakes with you, so you don?t have to make them.

So let?s jump right in.

1. Where?s the Problem?

Even if you find your passion, you still have to provide value. You have to help people in some way. You have to find the intersection between what you love to do , what people are willing to pay for, and what you?re good at.

In short, you have to find a problem to solve.

People don?t really care about you, they care about themselves. They are constantly asking themselves, ?What?s in it for me?? If you can answer that question, you?re on the right track.

2. Fear

You?re too old, too young, your voice is weird, you can?t write, you can?t market, whatever it is, it?s in your head and holding you back. Fear holds everyone back.

And fear can crush your dreams, if you let it.

Fear held me back for years, until I got so sick of it that I took action anyway. I was willing to at least try and see what would happen. And do you know what happened?

Nothing.

The fear eventually disappeared as I moved forward. The key is to jump in before you?re ready. Don?t wait for the stars to align.

Not tomorrow. Not someday. But right now.

3. Technical Mishaps

The choice of software is huge when starting a?home based business around your passion, especially an online business. Picking the wrong software can cause frustration down the line.

For example, you need a website to attract customers, and that means you need something to run your website, unless you?re proficient at HTML and want to do it the old-fashioned way. The best option for this is WordPress.

Focus on building a business that sustains you, not on making a quick buck.

5. Not Seeking Help

Don?t try to reinvent the wheel.

If you want to make rapid progress, find a coach or join a training course. Learn from those who have gone before you and know what they are doing. I?ve worked with people in every field I?ve gone into. When I started off as a professional poker player, I read books, I took courses, and I worked with successful poker players.

When I ventured into online business, I made the mistake of trying to learn everything myself at first. I eventually came to my senses and found someone I could learn from. Invest in your education and progress. You don?t have to spend years banging your head against the wall.

6. Lack of Focus

Another big mistake is not knowing what to focus on.

This is one of the reasons I recommend you learn from someone who knows what they are doing. They can help point you in the right direction. They can help you focus on tasks that give you the most results.

When I work with clients, the first thing we do is simplify everything. We eliminate what isn?t necessary, and we focus on what produces results. For example, when you start your business, you need to focus on one metric, and that is revenue. You need to bring in more money.

Last, but not least, you have to fail in order to succeed.

And that?s exactly what I did. I spent the first 2-3 years failing until things clicked. If you want to build a successful home-based business around your passion, you have to be willing to fail, and you have to be willing to take action.

And most of all, you have to be willing to face your inner demons.
