plan B ? Incredible Family

We were told once upon a time that nothing goes as planned in the foster care & adoption world.

I would agree with that wholeheartedly.

In yesterday?s home visit, our social worker informed us that she was leaving the agency, and then told us several bits of information that hadn?t been brought to our attention previously. ?If we had known this information from Day One, we probably would have taken a different path. ?As many times as we have asked about it, we were always given positive answers and encouraging reports. ?I don?t believe our social worker is a disgruntled employee leaving with a grudge on her shoulder, I think she felt obligated to give us the straight up truth before we receive a baby. ?She told us ~

1. in the past year, only two babies have been freed for adoption. ?Out of a lot of babies who come into foster care. ?So our chances, despite everyone?s previously glowing promises, are slim for adoption. ?She went into lots of detail about why so few were freed, but the bottom line is parental reunification is the state?s #1 goal, foster parents have no voice or rights in the legal system, and birth parents are given chance after chance to reunify with their child, even if their baby has been in foster care for years and years. ?If we were fostering and looking to adopt an older child, our chances for adoption would HUGELY increase, but since we?re trying to respect our boys? birth order and place in our home, we?re only looking at under age 2 which limits us.

2. the agency?s ?foster to adopt? program has been eliminated, so when a child comes into their care, they match with the first available person on the list without regard to parents who are working towards adoption or who would be the best ?fit? for the child.

We?re not entirely sure where to go from here. ?We?re going to complete our home study (one more document needed!) before our worker leaves so we can sign off on the home study and have those documents in hand. ?And we?re actively working on Plan B because Plan A might not be something we can handle??
