Study rebuts hypothesis that comet attacks ended 9,000-year-old Clovis culture

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Rebutting a speculative hypothesis that comet explosions changed Earth's climate sufficiently to end the Clovis culture in North America about 13,000 years ago, Sandia lead author Mark Boslough and researchers from 14 academic institutions assert that other explanations must be found for the apparent disappearance.

"There's no plausible mechanism to get airbursts over an entire continent," said Boslough, a physicist. "For this and other reasons, we conclude that the impact hypothesis is, unfortunately, bogus."

In a December 2012 American Geophysical Union monograph, first available in January, the researchers point out that no appropriately sized impact craters from that time period have been discovered, nor have any unambiguously "shocked" materials been found.

In addition, proposed fragmentation and explosion mechanisms "do not conserve energy or momentum," a basic law of physics that must be satisfied for impact-caused climate change to have validity, the authors write.

Also absent are physics-based models that support the impact hypothesis. Models that do exist, write the authors, contradict the asteroid-impact hypothesizers.

The authors also charge that "several independent researchers have been unable to reproduce reported results" and that samples presented in support of the asteroid impact hypothesis were later discovered by carbon dating to be contaminated with modern material.

The Boslough trail

Boslough has a decades-long history of successfully interpreting the effects of comet and asteroid collisions.

His credibility was on the line on in July 1994 when Eos, the widely read newsletter of the American Geophysical Union, ran a front-page prediction by a Sandia National Laboratories team, led by Boslough, that under certain conditions plumes from the collision of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with the planet Jupiter would be visible from Earth.

The Sandia team -- Boslough, Dave Crawford, Allen Robinson and Tim Trucano -- were alone among the world's scientists in offering that possibility.

"It was a gamble and could have been embarrassing if we were wrong," said Boslough. "But I had been watching while Shoemaker-Levy 9 made its way across the heavens and realized it would be close enough to the horizon of Jupiter that the plumes would show." His reasoning was backed by simulations from the world's first massively parallel processing supercomputer, Sandia's Intel Paragon.

On the one hand, it was a chance to check the new Paragon's logic against real events, a shakedown run for the defense-oriented machine. On the other, it was a hold-your-breath prediction, a kind of Babe Ruth moment when the Babe is reputed to have pointed to the spot in the center field bleachers he intended to hit the next ball. No other scientists were willing to point the same way, partly due to previous failures in predicting the behavior of comets Kohoutek and Halley, and partly because most astronomers believed the plumes would be hidden behind Jupiter's bulk.

That the plumes indeed proved visible started Boslough on his own trajectory as a media touchstone for things asteroidal and meteoritic.

It didn't hurt that, when he stands before television cameras to discuss celestial impacts, his earnest manner, expressive gestures and extraterrestrial subject matter make him seem a combination of Carl Sagan and Luke Skywalker, or perhaps Tom Sawyer and Indiana Jones.

Standing in jeans, work shirt and hiking boots for the Discovery Channel at the site in Siberia where a mysterious explosion occurred 105 years ago, or discussing it at Sandia with his supercomputer simulations in bold colors on a big screen behind him, the rangy, 6-foot-3 Sandia researcher vividly and accurately explained why the mysterious explosion at Tunguska that decimated hundreds of square miles of trees and whose ejected debris was seen as far away as London most probably was caused neither by flying saucers drunkenly ramming a hillside (a proposed hypothesis) nor by an asteroid striking the Earth's surface, but rather by the fireball of an asteroid airburst -- an asteroid exploding high above ground, like a nuclear bomb, compressed to implosion as it plunged deeper into Earth's thickening, increasingly resistive atmosphere. The governing physics, he said, was precisely the same as for the airburst on Jupiter.

Among later triumphs, Boslough was the Sandia component of a National Geographic team flown to the Libyan Desert to make sense of strange yellow-green glass worn as jewelry by pharaohs in days past. Boslough's take: It was the result of heat on desert sands from a hypervelocity impact caused by an even bigger asteroid burst.

In the present case

In the Clovis case, Boslough felt that his ideas were taken further than he could accept when other researchers claimed that the purported demise of Clovis civilization in North America was the result of climate change produced by a cluster of comet fragments striking Earth.

In a widely reported press conference announcing the Clovis comet hypothesis in 2007, proponents showed a National Geographic animation based on one of Boslough's simulations as inspiration for their idea.

Indiana Jones-style, Boslough responded. Confronted by apparently hard asteroid evidence, as well as a Nova documentary and an article in the journal Science, all purportedly showing his error in rebutting the comet hypothesis, Boslough ordered carbon dating of the major evidence provided by the opposition: nanodiamond-bearing carbon spherules associated with the shock of an asteroid's impact. The tests found the alleged 13,000-year-old carbon to be of very recent formation.

While this raised red flags to those already critical of the impact hypothesis, "I never said the samples were salted," Boslough said carefully. "I said they were contaminated."

That find, along with irregularities reported in the background of one member of the opposing team, was enough for Nova to remove the entire episode from its list of science shows available for streaming, Boslough said.

"Just because a culture changed from Clovis to Folsom spear points didn't mean their civilization collapsed," he said. "They probably just used another technology. It's like saying the phonograph culture collapsed and was replaced by the iPod culture."

NASA to launch ocean wind monitor to space station

Jan. 29, 2013 ? In a clever reuse of hardware originally built to test parts of NASA's QuikScat satellite, the agency will launch the ISS-RapidScat instrument to the International Space Station in 2014 to measure ocean surface wind speed and direction.

The ISS-RapidScat instrument will help improve weather forecasts, including hurricane monitoring, and understanding of how ocean-atmosphere interactions influence Earth's climate.

"The ability for NASA to quickly reuse this hardware and launch it to the space station is a great example of a low-cost approach that will have high benefits to science and life here on Earth," said Mike Suffredini, NASA's International Space Station program manager.

ISS-RapidScat will help fill the data gap created when QuikScat, which was designed to last two years but operated for 10, stopped collecting ocean wind data in late 2009. A scatterometer is a microwave radar sensor used to measure the reflection or scattering effect produced while scanning the surface of Earth from an aircraft or a satellite.

NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have studied next-generation replacements for QuikScat, but a successor will not be available soon. To meet this challenge cost-effectively, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and the agency's station program proposed adapting leftover QuikScat hardware in combination with new hardware for use on the space station.

"ISS-RapidScat represents a low-cost approach to acquiring valuable wind vector data for improving global monitoring of hurricanes and other high-intensity storms," said Howard Eisen, ISS-RapidScat project manager at JPL. "By leveraging the capabilities of the International Space Station and recycling leftover hardware, we will acquire good science data at a fraction of the investment needed to launch a new satellite."

ISS-RapidScat will have measurement accuracy similar to QuikScat's and will survey all regions of Earth accessible from the space station's orbit. The instrument will be launched to the space station aboard a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft. It will be installed on the end of the station's Columbus laboratory as an autonomous payload requiring no interaction by station crew members. It is expected to operate aboard the station for two years.

ISS-RapidScat will take advantage of the space station's unique characteristics to advance understanding of Earth's winds. Current scatterometer orbits pass the same point on Earth at approximately the same time every day. Since the space station's orbit intersects the orbits of each of these satellites about once every hour, ISS-RapidScat can serve as a calibration standard and help scientists stitch together the data from multiple sources into a long-term record.

ISS-RapidScat also will collect measurements of Earth's global wind field at all times of day for all locations. Variations in winds caused by the sun can play a significant role in the formation of tropical clouds and tropical systems that play a dominant role in Earth's water and energy cycles. ISS-RapidScat observations will help scientists understand these phenomena better and improve weather and climate models.

The ISS-RapidScat project is a joint partnership of JPL and NASA's International Space Station Program Office at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, with support from the Earth Science Division of the Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

Orcas Kings football team on to the playoffs

Contributed by Erika Harlow, mother to Kings player Miles Harlow

On an early, rainy Saturday morning the Orcas Kings departed for what could have been their last football game of the season.

Facing the La Conner Braves, they were fighting for a post season spot. Upon winning the coin toss the Kings opted to kick off and come out with their hard-hitting defense. On the first play Aidan Kruse was able to strip the ball, and teammate Miles Harlow recovered the fumble.

Together with Kruse, the Kings defense is led by Ryan Flint, William Lewis and Owen Thurman. The Kings played the rest of the half in Braves territory, managing a strong La?Conner defense.

At halftime the score remained 0-0. The sky had cleared for this football game but the field remained soggy, muddy and full of puddles.

In the third quarter the Kings had adjusted to the weather and were able to score on their first possession. Harlow found receiver Ivan Bullock 30 yards downfield and Bullock raced into the endzone for the team's first TD.

Kruse kicked the extra point to make the score 8-0. When the Braves were forced to punt, Jordan Randolph was there to return the kick for another TD. The point after made the score 15-0.

The Braves were backed into their own end zone when defensive end Ryan Flint stripped the ball and ran it in for another Orcas TD. The score was 21-0, and the Kings were not slowing down.

In the fourth quarter La Conner was able to score after a long defensive standoff. The score remained in the Kings favor at 21-7.

The Kings sealed the deal with a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Miles Harlow with only seconds left to play in the game. Miles was protected exceptionally well the entire game by offensive lineman Brother Murphy and Daniel O'Brien.

These young men are headed to the playoffs, folks! It is yet to be determined who they will meet in their first round, but you can be sure that whoever they are they will remember our Kings!?Good luck, guys!

?Girl Play TV? fills the void of leading fictional black lesbian characters with masculine-centered or identified women. The New Orleans-based show is about four femme-identified lesbians and their journeys to finding loving and their own identities.

?I chose to focus on femme identified lesbians because the majority of web series that cater to the African American lesbian community focus on masculine-identified women," creator, writer and producer Aryka Randall told Huff Post Gay Voices. "The story lines follow 'studs' and highlight relationships between them and their feminine partners. While this is common in the LGBT community, it?s not a reality for all of us. There are a number of feminine lesbian women who prefer to date feminine women, and I felt like their stories needed to be told."

The series premiered Jan. 29 with the aim of showing viewers a new perspective of what it?s like to live in the South.

?I wanted to show viewers a new perspective on what?s it like to live in the South. New Orleans is very rich in culture and diversity and the scenery is very unique and very beautiful,? Randall said.

Qualcomm beats street, raises guidance, shares rise

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Qualcomm Inc beat Wall Street expectations for its fiscal first-quarter earnings and revenue and raised its financial targets for 2013 due to growing demand for smartphones and high-speed wireless services.

Qualcomm shares rose 6 percent in late trade on Wednesday as the outlook from the leading supplier of chips for cellphones wowed investors in contrast with sluggish demand at chip makers such as Texas Instruments and Broadcom Corp .

The company, which also announced the retirement of its chief financial officer on Wednesday, said it was seeing strong growth in emerging markets such as China and Latin America.

But outgoing CFO Bill Keitel said on the company's conference call with analysts that the outlook also reflects macro economic weakness.

"Given continued global macroeconomic uncertainties, we are continuing to maintain a cautious outlook for the year ahead," said Keitel, who will be replaced by George Davis, currently CFO of Applied Materials , in March.

San Diego-based Qualcomm is benefiting from strong demand for smartphones and a move by network operators around the world to a high-speed wireless technology known as Long Term Evolution (LTE), where Qualcomm is ahead of rivals.

"That trend is continuing to work in Qualcomm's favor. They're the only viable option for LTE right now," said MKM Partners analyst Daniel Berenbaum. "It's a very strong quarter and the guidance is very strong."

As well as supplying chips for cellphones and tablet computers, Qualcomm also receives royalty payments from any cellphone makers that do not use its chips.

"It looks like in the quarter, a little bit of the upside came from chipsets," said Berenbaum. "In the guidance, chipsets came in around expectations. It looks like royalties are the upside to guidance."

Qualcomm raised its full-year revenue guidance to a range of $23.4 billion to $24.4 billion from its previous target of $23 billion to $24 billion.

It raised its earnings per share target to a range of $4.25 to $4.45 from its previous forecast range of $4.12 to $4.32.

Qualcomm posted a profit of $1.91 billion or $1.09 per share for the quarter ended December 30, compared with a profit of $1.4 billion or 81 cents per share in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding unusual items, the San Diego-based company reported earnings per share of $1.26 compared with Wall Street expectations of $1.13, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose to $6.02 billion from $4.68 billion in the year-ago quarter and compared with Wall Street expectations for $5.9 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Qualcomm shares rose to $67.40 in late trade after closing at $63.53 in the regular Nasdaq session. The last time its shares reached this level in regular Nasdaq trading was in early April 2012. Its shares reached a post-dotcom bubble high of $68.87 in late March of 2012.

(AP) ? Stocks edged higher on Wall Street, pushing the Dow toward 14,000, as investors digested the latest round of earnings and economic reports.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 57 points to 13,939 points as of noon EST. The Standard and Poor's 500 rose five points to 1,505 points. The Nasdaq composite dropped less than a point to 3,153.

Stocks are approaching record levels after a January rally that has pushed the Dow 6.2 percent higher this month and the S&P 500 up 5.3 percent, its highest level since December 2007. Demand was bolstered after lawmakers reached a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" at the start of the year and by reports that have added to evidence showing that the U.S. housing market is recovering and the jobs market is slowly healing.

Homebuilder D.R. Horton gained $2.04 to $23.35 after it said that net income more than doubled as the housing recovery took hold. Improving home prices and better sales bolstered profits. Drugmaker Pfizer rose 83 cents to $27.67 after the company said its fourth-quarter profit more than quadrupled because of a $4.8 billion gain from selling its nutrition business, despite competition from generic drugs hurting sales.

Investor optimism was checked by a report that showed U.S. consumer confidence sank in January to the lowest level in more than a year as Americans fretted about the economic outlook and higher Social Security taxes. The Conference Board said that its consumer confidence index dropped to 58.6 in January, down from a reading of 66.7 in December.

Stocks also failed to get much of a lift from a report published before the market opened that showed the U.S. housing market is sustaining its recovery.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index rose 5.5 percent in November compared with the same month a year ago, pushed higher by rising sales and a tighter supply of available homes.

"The turnaround in the housing market is for real," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, who says the decline in consumer confidence will likely prove to be temporary as home prices rise. He predicts that the S&P 500 may climb as high as 1,575 this quarter as investor optimism about the economic recovery grows.

The Federal Reserve starts a two-day meeting Tuesday. Investors will also be looking at the release of their statement Wednesday for clues about the outlook for the economy and interest rates.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose by 1 basis point to 1.97 percentage points. The yield on the note, which moves inversely to its price, rose briefly above 2 percent for the first time since April during trading Monday.

Other stocks in the news;

? Ford fell 81 cents to $12.97 despite reporting earnings that beat analysts' estimates. The automaker said that its losses in Europe would be bigger than it had previously forecast. The company's stock has advanced 56 percent in the last six months.

? Seagate Technology, which makes hard disk drives for storage, fell $3.25 to $34.16 after it reported a 13 percent drop in profits as expenses outpaced revenue growth.

? Software company VMware fell $20.05 to $78.27 after it said that it late Monday that it expects first-quarter revenue to come in lower than Wall Street analysts had forecast. The company is also cutting 900 jobs, or about 7 percent of its workforce.

Jane Austen tourism booms as 'Pride and Prejudice' turns 200

1 day

When a classic love story has a big birthday, it?s time to have a ball ? literally.

Monday marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the Jane Austen novel that introduced feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet, seemingly aloof Mr. Darcy and a world of manor homes and grand estates that turned England into a dream destination for readers around the globe.

Balls, dances and other special events are taking place this year to celebrate the bicentennial as Austen continues to lure travelers.

?She?s hugely important,? said Meredith Pearson, a spokeswoman for VisitBritain. The country?s national tourism agency maintains a guide for fans eager to experience the "Pride and Prejudice" lifestyle.

?We found that, to this day, because of the popularity of those stories, it?s something that visitors really, really enjoy doing,? Pearson said.

Even if you haven?t read the book, chances are you?re familiar with the plot of ?Pride and Prejudice? after catching the recent film version starring Keira Knightley, seeing ?Bridget Jones? Diary????a modern reboot of the novel ? or watching the blockbuster 1995 BBC mini-series starring Colin Firth, which led to a huge surge in visitors, Pearson noted.

No wonder, then, tourism is booming along Austen?s trail in England, a path that traditionally takes visitors to the resort city of Bath, the verdant landscapes of Derbyshire and the village of Chawton.

The author lived in Bath from 1801 to 1806 and chose the city as the setting for two of her novels. Today, about 60,000 people a year flock to The Jane Austen Centre, which chronicles her Bath experience, said Jennie Rogers, general manager of the attraction.

Besides taking in the Centre?s permanent exhibition and sampling Georgian biscuits, visitors can also try on fashions from Austen?s era ? empire-waist dresses, bonnets, gloves and parasols for the ladies; waistcoats, coats and top hats for the gentlemen.

?Our visitors become overwhelmed when trying on our replica costumes,? Rogers said. ?(They) love the romance of Jane's novels and the way in which they can relate to her character's dilemmas and issues???even today.?

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the Centre is hosting an ?International Readathon? on Monday, when dozens of actors, authors and Austen experts will read the book aloud in its entirety during a 12-hour period.

The city of Bath has put together a suggested itinerary for Austen fans, including taking a walk along the Royal Crescent, where the author often strolled, and enjoying afternoon tea in The Pump Room, which was a popular gathering spot during Austen?s era.

If you?d like to dress up and party Austen-style, there?s the Jane Austen Festival Regency Costumed Summer Ball on June 22, which features Regency dancing???the intricate choreography that requires ladies and gentlemen to form lines and circles, and twirl around and bow to each other.

?We hope to dance Mr. Beveridge's Maggot???a dance made popular by the BBC 1995 version of ?Pride and Prejudice,?? said organizer Jackie Herring.

The novel is also the theme of this year?s Bath Jane Austen Festival, scheduled to take place Sept. 13-21, complete with a Mr. Darcy lookalike contest, a masked ball and workshops on how to perfect the Regency look.

Fans who want to stroll through grand estates and gardens featured in the novels should head to the Derbyshire region of England where many of the Austen movies and mini-series were filmed. The district maintains a list of all the locations used in the productions.

Pearson thinks U.S. visitors love the sites because they?re so uniquely British.

?It?s part of that fairly tale, in a way. Because (the U.S. is) such a young country comparatively, the fact that there are these gorgeous old manor houses and country houses ? it really takes people away and it really catches Americans? imagination,? Pearson said.

One such home is Chatsworth House, said to have inspired Pemberley, Mr. Darcy?s estate in ?Pride and Prejudice.?

To see where Austen created some of her characters, visit her former home in Chawton, now transformed into Jane Austen?s House Museum.

This is where the author spent the last eight years of her life and wrote ?Mansfield Park,? ?Emma,? and ?Persuasion.? To celebrate the 200th anniversary of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the museum is displaying first editions of the book, original illustrations and the table where Austen worked.

British tourism officials?? who are still giddy about the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee and all the other events that drew visitors to the region last year???are hoping Austen?s legacy will continue the momentum in 2013.

?It?s a great year to come over and experience all of the literary connections in the UK,? Pearson said.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Vick throws a pass as he is rushed by New York Giants Umenyiora in the second quarter during their NFL football game in East RutherfordReuters

While it?s true that the Philadelphia Eagles won?t be dumping quarterback Mike Vick before $3 million of his $15.5 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed on February 6, the Eagles won?t be taking their time in deciding whether Vick will be moving along.

The plan, as we understand it, will unfold like a flow chart.

Step one, new Eagles coach Chip Kelly will study film in an effort to decide whether he wants Vick or Nick Foles or someone else to be the team?s quarterback.

Step two, if Kelly decides that he definitely wants Vick, will be to try to work out an alternative arrangement that entails Vick making less than $15.5 million.? The amount the Eagles are willing to pay will be determined in large part by how badly Kelly wants Vick.? There?s a chance, in theory, that Kelly will want Vick badly enough to bite the bullet and pay the full amount.

There?s also a chance Vick will want to play for Kelly badly enough to take a proverbial haircut on his promised pay.

Step three, if it?s determined that Kelly doesn?t want Vick or that Vick won?t accept whatever reduced contract the team is offering, will be to try to trade Vick to another team that would pay him more than the Eagles are willing to pay ? and that would also give the Eagles value in return for the 2010 comeback player of the year.

Time is of the essence on all steps, because if the Eagles are going to maximize trade interest and trade value, they need to do it before teams make other plans at quarterback, by signing for example a free agent.? It?s expected that the Eagles will head to the Scouting Combine with an action plan, with the hopes of getting an agreement in principle with a new team well before March 13, when trades will become finalized.

Complicating a potential trade is that a new team would have to pay Vick $15.5 million this year or persuade him to take less.

If the Eagles can?t trade Vick and if they can?t work out a new deal with him, that?s when things will get interesting.? If Vick shows up for the start of the offseason workout program in April and drops a dumbbell on his foot or pops an Achilles while running at the practice facility, the Eagles will owe him the full amount of his salary if/when he lands on injured reserve.

The Eagles could be tempted to try to block Vick from the facility, like the Titans did several years ago with the late Steve McNair.? But McNair ultimately won his grievance on that issue, and the Eagles would be tiptoeing into dangerous territory if they try to freeze Vick out.

That approach also would counter the team?s new effort to treat its players with a higher level of respect and dignity, an approach that G.M. Howie Roseman seems to be adopting in the wake of the departure of former team president Joe Banner.? (This presumes that there was a problem under Banner; some with the Eagles may be trying to sell the idea that there was.? The Mike Patterson debacle would tend to counter the idea that everything is fine and dandy now.)

Regardless, while the Eagles aren?t worried about next week?s deadline, they?ll be operating on internal deadlines that will prevent this from lingering deep into the offseason.

Why are there redheads? Birds might hold the clues

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Red coloration -- historically seen as costly in vertebrates -- might represent some physiological benefit after all, according to research published in the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology.

Pheomelanin, which is responsible for red hair and freckles in humans and orange and chestnut coloration in other animals, is known to increase the damage to skin cells and melanoma risk when present in large amounts. Furthermore, its creation involves the consumption of glutathione, a beneficial antioxidant.

In an attempt to unearth the factors favoring the evolution of pheomelanin in spite of its costs, Ismael Galv?n and Anders P. M?ller of the University of Paris-Sud examined the survival from one breeding season to the next of a wild European population of barn swallows, as well as the annual survival rates of 58 species of American birds.

A recent hypothesis claims that the consumption of cysteine (a component of glutathione) that occurs when pheomelanin is produced can be beneficial under conditions of low stress. Cysteine, which is mainly acquired through diet, can be toxic at high levels, so the production of pheomelanin may help to sequester excess quantities of this amino acid.

Galv?n and M?ller measured birds' blood levels of uric acid and analyzed the coloration of their chestnut throat feathers (an indication of pheomelanin content). When they compared birds that had similar uric acid levels (and therefore similar capacities to excrete excess amino acids), they found that both the European barn swallows and the American birds with larger amounts of pheomelanin in their feathers survived better.

This study is the first to propose that the costs/benefits of pheomelanin may depend on prevailing environmental conditions, and its results suggest that the production of this pigment may even be beneficial in some circumstances. Given that all higher vertebrates, including humans, present pheomelanin in skin, pelage, and plumage, Galv?n and M?ller's findings increase the scant current knowledge on the physiological consequences of pheomelanin and open new avenues for research that will help us understand the evolution of pigmentation.

(AP) ? The joint U.S. and Japanese investigation into the Boeing 787's battery problems has shifted from the battery-maker to the manufacturer of a monitoring system.

Japan transport ministry official Shigeru Takano said Monday the probe into battery-maker GS Yuasa was over for now as no evidence was found it was the source of the problems.

Ministry officials said they will inspect Kanto Aircraft Instrument Co. on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation. It makes a system that monitors voltage, charging and temperature of the lithium-ion batteries.

All 50 of the Boeing 787s in use around the world are grounded after one of the jets operated by All Nippon Airways made an emergency landing in Japan earlier this month when its main battery overheated. Earlier in January, a battery in a Japan Airlines 787 caught fire while parked at Boston's Logan International Airport.

GS Yuasa shares jumped on the news it is no longer being investigated, gaining nearly 5 percent in Tokyo trading. The issue had plunged 12 percent after the battery problems surfaced in Japan.

Ministry officials stopped short of saying that Kanto's monitoring system was under any special scrutiny, saying it was part of an ongoing investigation.

"We are looking into affiliated parts makers," Takano said. "We are looking into possibilities."

Kyoto-based GS Yuasa declined to comment, noting that the investigation was still underway.

Hideaki Kobayashi, spokesman for Kanto Aircraft, based in Fujisawa, southwest of Tokyo, declined comment. He said it was too early to tell whether its system was behind the problems.

Last week, U.S. federal investigators said the JAL battery that caught fire showed evidence of short-circuiting and a chemical reaction known as "thermal runaway," in which an increase in temperature causes progressively hotter temperatures. It's not clear to investigators which came first, the short-circuiting or the thermal runaway.

Deliveries of the jet dubbed the Dreamliner were three years behind schedule because of manufacturing delays. Much of the aircraft is made by outside manufacturers, many of them major Japanese companies who make about 35 percent of the plane.

It is the first jet to make wide use of lithium-ion batteries, the kind usually found in laptops and other gadgets. They are prone to overheating and require additional systems to avoid fires.

Investigators have been looking at the remnants of the ANA flight's charred battery, but it is unclear whether the battery or a related part was behind its overheating. Investigators have said the ANA battery and the JAL battery did not receive excess voltage.

Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways was the "launch customer" for the 787, and has been forced to cancel services ? 643 domestic flights through Feb. 12, affecting 69,000 passengers, and 195 international flights through Feb. 18, affecting 13,620 passengers.

Japan Airlines, which has fewer 787s than ANA, has deployed other aircraft in its fleet, minimizing its flight cancellations.

Boeing, which competes against Airbus of France, has halted 787 deliveries. Boeing has orders for more than 800 of the Dreamliner planes.

The 787 is the first airliner made mostly from lightweight composite materials that boost fuel efficiency. It also relies on electronic systems rather than hydraulic or mechanical systems to a greater degree than any other airliner.

Analysts say customers won't come back to the 787 unless its safety is solidly assured.

Deadlines coming this week for fishers and hunters | Outdoors | The ...

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's comment period on proposed changes to sport fishing regulations for 2013-14 closes Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The fish and wildlife commission is considering at least seven changes applying to Whatcom and Skagit County waters.

This rule-making process has its limits, covering the rules for recreational fishing for gamefish in freshwater, as well as some finfish and shellfish in marine waters. Rules and seasons for halibut and salmon for non-treaty anglers in Washington derive from separate processes in January and April.

For our neck of the woods in northern Region 4, under consideration are several new regulations that would restore angling opportunities lost when the so-called "new paradigm" for Puget Sound, northern inland waters and Strait of Juan de Fuca streams took effect three years ago.

My personal favorite is the proposed restoration of fishing in certain beaver ponds in Whatcom and Skagit counties. Proposal Number 41 will reopen beaver ponds if they are on or adjacent to streams otherwise open seasonally for trout (gamefish).

This conditional reprieve will see to the restoration of fishing for trout in some challenging but worthy waters such as the upper North Fork Nooksack river valley above Nooksack Falls and Baker river valley above Shannon Dam.

Other possible rule modifications for waters in this area contained in the package are:

? No. 47. Open most tributaries to Ross Lake to angling from one mile upstream of Ross Lake to headwaters (except Ruby Creek closed and its tributaries open) under certain restrictions.

? No. 46. Reduce waterfowl hunter/angler use conflicts on Fazon & Tennant Lakes by not allowing fishing from a floating device until Jan. 28, to coincide with the closing date of waterfowl hunting season.

? No. 50. Increase angling opportunity on the South Fork Nooksack River and all tributaries, upstream from and including Wanlick Creek under fly fishing only plus catch-and-release provisos.

? No. 53. Shorten fishing season on Channel Creek (Baker Lake) to protect spawning sockeye by changing to an Aug. 30 closure date.

? No. 54. Open a selective gear rules trout fishery in the lower Skagit River from the mouth to Highway 536 Memorial Bridge at Mount Vernon from March 1 through May 31 under certain controls.

? No. 55. Close angling on Hutchinson Creek to protect wild steelhead.

There are 62 other recommended changes for specific waters elsewhere around the state, in marine waters or with broader statewide implications or applications.

The way to get your message across is online, streamlined and highly convenient.

Simply go to http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/rule_proposals/ and click on the link to get to the view and comment portal.

From there you call up each specific rule's page by clicking on the synopsis statement, and there is an e-form on which you can register and comment.

The Fish and Wildlife Commission will take formal testimony on all proposals at its February session, at which written comments also may be submitted.

Final decisions on all these changes will be made by the nine-member panel in March, when 2013-14 sport regulations are enacted.

These new rules will take on the force of law on May 1, 2013.

Starting in February the Fish and Wildlife Department and Western Washington treaty tribes formally begin the business of setting salmon seasons in a nearly three-month endeavor called the North of Falcon Process. This starts with a day-long announcement and discussion of 2013 salmon run forecasts, which usually takes place the first week of February.

We also are awaiting the announcement of the International Pacific Halibut Commission's determinations on 2013 allowable flattie harvests.

Catch allocations for discrete areas throughout the Northeast Pacific were made at the IPHC's annual meeting Jan. 21-25 in Victoria, B.C.

Those allotments will enable Washington fisheries managers to set by late March personal use seasons that usually occur in May and June.

DON'T FORGET

If you drew documents to hunt big game species and/or special waterfowl as well as dipped gear for Dungeness crab in the late season this past year, deadlines are approaching to report your efforts and success.

The end of January is the witching hour for deer, elk, black bear and turkey and crabbing reports. You must report hunting activity whether successful or not or the lack of any effort on each individual transport tag purchased.

Waterfowl gunners with special written authorizations to hunt sea-ducks anywhere, brant in Skagit County or snow geese in Goose Management Area 1 must report by Friday, Feb. 15.

Failure to report could cost you money in the future.

APPLY FOR 2013 HUNTS

Idaho non-resident deer and elk tags have been on sale since Dec. 1. Wyoming opened its application period for non-resident controlled hunts for big game species on Jan. 1.

Idaho is accepting applications for spring black bear hunt permits.

Veteran hunters visiting Wyoming should not wait for the usual booklet to arrive in the mail. Since most drawing transactions now occur online, Wyoming hunt managers have done away with the printed application booklet, and that may not be the only change in store for out-of-state hunters.

WINTER-RUN HATCHERY WATCH

The inter-basin transfer of hatchery winter-run steelhead eggs, to make up deficits if a hatchery does not get its needed spawners, is now prohibited, so it is more important than ever for enough adult fish to reach their artificial spawning destinations.

Under the state's steelhead management plan and individual hatchery genetics management plans, facilities must spawn the earliest returning adipose fin-clipped adults that return.

Hatchery fish must arrive in spawning facility traps by Jan. 31 to be eligible for breeding. Any marked fish arriving after that is not to be used for spawning - nor, under the state's hatchery genetic management plan, can wild fish (non-adipose clipped fish) under any circumstances be included in broodstock for spawning.

For more details in individual hatchery programs for winter-run steelhead, visit http://wdfw.wa.gov/hatcheries/hgmp/2002-2005_archive.html#pugetsound and http://wdfw.wa.gov/hatcheries/esa.html.

As of Thursday, Jan. 24, these are the numbers, reported by installation, of adult hatchery winter-run steelhead trapped as well as eggs already taken and other details:

Maritime Heritage Center Hatchery (Whatcom Creek): one adult reported, no eggs taken

Kendall Creek Hatchery (North Fork Nooksack River): 62 adults, 72,000 eggs taken (target 165,000 egg take)

Marblemount Hatchery (Cascade River, Skagit): 153 adults, 263,000 eggs taken (target 275,000 egg take)

Whitehorse Hatchery (North Fork Stillaguamish River): 126 adults, 227,890 eggs taken

Tokul Creek Hatchery (Snoqualmie River, Snohomish): 569 adults, 657,353 eggs taken

Soos Creek Hatchery (Green River): 77 adults, 108,000 eggs taken

Dungeness Hatchery (Dungeness River): 36 adults, 31,000 eggs taken

Bogachiel Hatchery (Bogachiel River, Quillayute): 1,930 adults, 306,000 eggs taken

Humptulips Hatchery (Humptulips River): 785 adults, 229,750 eggs taken

Forks Creek Hatchery (Willapa River): 587 adults, 200,000 eggs taken

Cowlitz Hatchery (Cowlitz River): 852 adults, no eggs taken

Berries may be healthful, but some health benefits of berries may not make it past your mouth

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Research has suggested that compounds that give colorful fruits their rich hues, especially berries, promote health and might even prevent cancer. But for the first time, scientists have exposed extracts from numerous berries high in those pigments to human saliva to see just what kinds of health-promoting substances are likely to survive and be produced in the mouth.

It's too early to name the best berry for health promotion based on this initial work. But the researchers have discovered that two families of pigments that provide berries with their colors, called anthocyanins, are more susceptible to degradation in the mouth than are the other four classes of these pigments.

The Ohio State University study also showed that bacteria living in the mouth are responsible for most of the breakdown of these compounds that occurs in saliva. Researchers are investigating whether it's the berry pigments themselves, or instead the products of their degradation, that actually promote health.

Scientists say that these early findings will contribute to the further development of confectionaries, gums and other delivery devices for the prevention and possibly the treatment of conditions such as periodontal disease and oral cancers.

The researchers exposed extracts of anthocyanin pigments from blueberries, chokeberries, black raspberries, red grapes and strawberries to the saliva collected from 14 people. Black raspberries, in particular, have been shown in numerous previous studies to have chemopreventive effects on tumors in the mouth, esophagus and colon, mostly in animal studies. Their high anthocyanin content has been linked to those benefits.

"All fruits are unique because their chemical composition, or fingerprint, varies," said Mark Failla, professor of human nutrition at Ohio State and interim chair of the Department of Human Sciences. "There are many different edible berries. Some might be better for providing health-promoting effects within the oral cavity, whereas others may be more beneficial for colonic health. We simply do not know at this time.

"Increased intake of fruits and vegetables is associated with decreased risk of some chronic diseases. An understanding of the metabolism of these compounds, and the relative activities of the compounds in the consumed fruit and their metabolic products, is needed to make scientifically sound dietary recommendations and to develop effective delivery vehicles for the mouth," Failla said.

The research is published in a recent issue of the journal Food Chemistry.

Failla and colleagues asked 14 healthy individuals between the ages of 21 and 55 years to collect saliva in the morning before they had eaten breakfast or brushed their teeth. Research participants later collected additional saliva samples before and after they had rinsed their mouths with an antibacterial liquid.

The five fruits selected for study allowed the scientists to test the six distinct families of the anthocyanin pigments. Researchers purified the anthocyanins from each berry type and added the extracts to saliva.

The extent of the pigment degradation in saliva was primarily a function of the chemical structure of a given anthocyanin, said Failla, also an investigator in Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center and Food Innovation Center.

Two families of anthocyanins consistently degraded when exposed to saliva: delphinidin and petunidin. Four other families were more stable: cyanidin, pelargonidin, peonidin and malvidin.

"Our observations suggest that the bacteria within one's oral cavity are a primary mediator of pigment metabolism. The bacteria are converting compounds that are present in the foods into metabolites," Failla said. "One area of great interest is whether the health-promoting benefits associated with eating anthocyanin-rich fruits like berries are provided by the pigment itself, the natural combinations of the pigments in the fruit, or the metabolites produced by bacteria in the mouth and other regions of the gastrointestinal tract."

There is context for this study that further complicates the understanding of anthocyanins' benefits. Multiple studies have led to the conclusion that anthocyanins themselves are very poorly absorbed by the body.

"If anthocyanins are the actual health-promoting compound, you would want to design food products, confectionaries and gels containing mixtures of anthocyanins that are stable in the mouth. If, on the other hand, the metabolites produced by the metabolism of anthocyanins are the actual health-promoting compounds, there will be greater interest in fruits that contain anthocyanins that are less stable in the oral cavity," Failla said. "We lack such insights at this time."

The extent to which the anthocyanins were degraded varied among the 14 people whose saliva was used in the study. However, two families of anthocyanins consistently degraded the most in all volunteers. Failla said the observed variation among individuals is likely related to differences in the microbial community that resides in each person's mouth.

This research group is continuing the work, examining which bacteria are most involved in the metabolism of anthocyanins and testing the stability of the pigments in berry juices in the mouths of human volunteers rather than in test tubes containing their saliva.

This work was supported in part by the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center.

The doors of the Mission Neighborhood Health Center in San Francisco don't open until 7 am, but on the Saturday morning I was there, a dozen or so people were already lined up by 5:30. The group included a middle-aged white man who had lost his job managing a high-end restaurant and a black man wearing a crisp security guard blazer because he had to be at work by noon. Each was there hoping for a bed for the night. The city assigns most slots in its homeless shelters on a first-come, first-served basis by computer. The people had shown up here so early because they know through experience that every last bed will be claimed by 7:10 am.

Asphodel Meadows

Two powerful creatures fight over what Earth might become. In order to decide, they make a game with the lives of the humans of one city in the balance. Thus begins the story of Port City!

I am (constantly) going to be spitting hordes out left and right. While I'm not completely dry on ideas for tedlars and lesser angels, if I come up with all of them, I don't think they'll be creative enough hordes. Because of that, I made this topic.

Before you start pitching hundreds of thousands of monsters, you should know a couple things, though!

  1. I love creativity! I'm not a huge fan of "conventional" creatures, as in the popular reincarnation of creatures. As such, a regular vampire that turns into a bat? Probably not going to be entered. A Werewolf? That's probably not going to be entered either. If you want to add a vampire-like enemy, give it a twist outside of the usual shtick. Especially for tedlars, if they're otherworldly and odd, I'll love them. Lesser Angels are somewhat based on religious icons, but it's perfectly fine if you want to make them somewhat otherworldly too.
  2. There can only be so many enemies for each side before I stop letting you enter them. This is just so that the sides stay fair. I don't want the lesser angels to have tons of creatures, but then for whatever reason the tedlars have like... my original set. It would just be weird. So I will post every now and then "Not accepting Tedlars/Lesser Angels."
  3. This thread will be used to critique creatures, but it is not meant for bashing other people's creatures. I like creative criticism and I'm not a fan of "this sucks, here's nothing to help you make it better". In my original set, I didn't balance out the monsters very well, so I am sure plenty of people are going to come in and create balance. I think it is very likely that there will be monsters that are ridiculously over powered. Because of that, I do want you guys to monitor each other. I have the final say about what goes on the page... but you can influence the creature that appears.
  4. Your name appears on the front page with the monster! Yay, credit where credit is due! However, if you make a monster and you never come back and edit it... and then someone else takes your concept and gets that added, you'll have to share the credit.
  5. Kindly do not copy creatures straight from other works without mentioning that it similar to a creature from some other media. I don't want to have to mediate arguments about whether you "stole" a creature, I'm just going to assume you haven't. But if you pretty much have a creature straight from an Atlus game or Sonic the Hedgehog, I'll know, and I assume most people will be able to tell if you're taking creatures straight out of other media. So please try not to do that. On the same token, not everyone's played the same subset of games. So if someone creates an enemy that's pretty similar to something in another work, please don't start yelling at them about how they're stealing.
  6. PLEASE SAY WHETHER OR NOT THE CREATURE TRAVELS IN HORDES. For my created things, I know what they're like, but for yours I'm not sure what you want. If you create a creature that shows up in hordes and you don't write it down and I accept it, chances are I won't go back to the OOC when creating hordes to ask you if they show up in hordes. Then I maybe-sort-of ruined your creature. I don't want that! D: I am human, though, so it's pretty likely that I'll forget to check if you've entered whether or not they show up in hordes.

Okay... create!
