On an early, rainy Saturday morning the Orcas Kings departed for what could have been their last football game of the season.
Facing the La Conner Braves, they were fighting for a post season spot. Upon winning the coin toss the Kings opted to kick off and come out with their hard-hitting defense. On the first play Aidan Kruse was able to strip the ball, and teammate Miles Harlow recovered the fumble.
Together with Kruse, the Kings defense is led by Ryan Flint, William Lewis and Owen Thurman. The Kings played the rest of the half in Braves territory, managing a strong La?Conner defense.
At halftime the score remained 0-0. The sky had cleared for this football game but the field remained soggy, muddy and full of puddles.
In the third quarter the Kings had adjusted to the weather and were able to score on their first possession. Harlow found receiver Ivan Bullock 30 yards downfield and Bullock raced into the endzone for the team's first TD.
Kruse kicked the extra point to make the score 8-0. When the Braves were forced to punt, Jordan Randolph was there to return the kick for another TD. The point after made the score 15-0.
The Braves were backed into their own end zone when defensive end Ryan Flint stripped the ball and ran it in for another Orcas TD. The score was 21-0, and the Kings were not slowing down.
In the fourth quarter La Conner was able to score after a long defensive standoff. The score remained in the Kings favor at 21-7.
The Kings sealed the deal with a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Miles Harlow with only seconds left to play in the game. Miles was protected exceptionally well the entire game by offensive lineman Brother Murphy and Daniel O'Brien.
These young men are headed to the playoffs, folks! It is yet to be determined who they will meet in their first round, but you can be sure that whoever they are they will remember our Kings!?Good luck, guys!
